Program Goal:

The Women, Infants and Children Special Supplemental Nutrition Program helps families learn about making healthy food choices, breastfeeding and the importance of physical activity. The WIC program is also good at connecting families to community agencies and organizations that can help meet their needs.

Swope Health Services WIC program serves over 2,500 persons monthly. WIC provides at no cost nutritious foods to pregnant, breast-feeding and postpartum women as well as infants and children up to age 5. A registered dietitian and a board certified lactation counselor are on staff to provide nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support, as well as limited breastfeeding supplies and electric pumps. Participants meet certain income guidelines.

Eligible women and children receive vouchers for fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, rice, eggs and a variety of other healthy foods. For infants who are not breastfed, WIC provides some but not all the iron-fortified formula needed monthly. At 6 months of age infants receive cereal, fruits and vegetables.
