Socks and Hops Success Story: $25,000 and Lots of Socks!

SocksAndHopsThe Third Annual Socks and Hops fundraiser for Swope Health Services’ Healthcare for the Homeless programs was a rousing success.

More than 300 people joined the event at the City Market on Nov. 11, which raised more than $25,000 and brought hundreds of socks, hats and supplies for the homeless in Kansas City.

“We raised a glass or two, while also raising awareness of the needs of our community,” said Michelle Keller, Vice President of Community Engagement, Development and Outreach.

The event featured six craft beer brewers, one soda brewer, one coffee brewer and seven chefs from local restaurants.

Michael Crane, President and Co-Founder of Crane Brewing, applauds the unique aspect of the event, which is pairing brewers and chefs to produce specialty food and drink pairings.

socks and hops 2017 (3)“The amazing thing about Socks and Hops is there are several local craft breweries each paired with a local chef. Each chef masterfully pairs a dish with a beer from each brewery,” he said. “The event itself is a terrific value, but that it raises funds for such a great cause really makes it special.”

Crane, who has supported all three Socks and Hops programs, noted he initially wasn’t aware of SHS or the services provided through its network of 10 clinics.

“When I learned more about the services they provide to the community, I was thrilled to get behind this event and help in any way,” he said.  “I knew there was a large population of homeless in the Kansas City area. I also know that there are many families with children in great need today. With basic healthcare getting more difficult to afford, the services of Swope Health are needed now more than ever.”
